I am currently using a large grain sand/gravel for my juvi leopard.
I had also been told I need to switch to play sand.
I have also been told the calcium reptile sand is bad for them.
CONFUSION! LOL
I thought I would get a few suggestions from the group.
I prefer a natural tank decoration so, I really don't want to use paper towels.

I use paper towels right now just because they're easy to clean, but I think tile looks awesome in their tanks. I've heard they're pretty easy to clean too, though I haven't tried them out for myself yet. So you could have the natural color of sand without the risk of impaction!

I use the non stick shelf liner from walmart...its the thicker one..I usually either get the tan or black, both look awesome and they are so easy to clean. Also, you can train you gecko to go potty in one area. lol

Well After trying a few, I am now using paper towels for smaller tanks but, I put tile in a 40 gallon and It seems to work well, you just have to clean everyday. I have switched to all under ground heat sources and I worry about the heat being to hot with only paper towels.
I still have my "Old Ladies" they are 9 or 10 years old on large gravel, they seem to be doing great, they had always lived on reptile sand before.

I stand by repticarpet. Its what I use on ALL my young reptiles at home. Its what gets recommended with anything I sell also. If the leopard gecko is less than 5 inches I strongly recommend it if your not using it now. Papertowls work nicely, as well as newspaper, But its so ugly. The repticarpet is a soft yet coarse pad that you cut to fit your tank. For up to a 29 gallon it should run you like 12-15 dollars, After that its like 20-25 for the rest of the sizes. I'm really into landscaping my tanks so I would personally rather have something that looks decent vs a newspaper or paper towel.
Play sand is ok if you sift it very well. Play sand is softer than calci sand and is less likely to cause impaction but if you dont remove the rocks it will be fatal if swallowed. Just cause its less likely doesnt mean it wont cause impaction.
Calci sand is not good for them when they are young at all. If swallowed its like tiny shards of glass to their insides, And will eventually if not immediately cause impaction.
Crushed walnut shell is also OK for them but only after they have become full grown. Benefits to crushed walnut shell, would be easy absorption, holds heat pretty well, and is pretty cheap.
