Tokays are Solitary, nocturnal creatures who set up territories that are protected by a male and occasionally watched over by a female
Tokays will eat anything they can catch and chew. In a captive enviroment, Tokays will eat crickets, pinkey mice, and small lizards, cacaroaches, and meal worms.
They bark a warning before biting that sounds much like the bark of a tree frog. The Tokay will readily bite and bite hard. They can do as little damage as a few stitches or in severe cases they can take off a finger. They lock their jaw and WILL NOT release. They are definatly "Looking" animals. Not to be held EVER, but are very worthwhile pets.
The casting off of the tail is another defense. The tail thrashes violently for several minutes to distract the predator and give the gecko a chance to get away. The tail regenerates in about 3 weeks although it is never as long or as ornate as the original. 3 weeks is an extremely short period of time if you take in to account the actual length of their tails.
Tokay Geckos are for the person who enjoys watching but not touching their pets. But what a display these critters give those who are able to watch these agile hunters move through the darkness of their home.
Their markings are beautiful, with tons of different colors and markings these guys are awsome. Another good thing about these guys is their price. They are normally any where from 15.99 to 29.99 but regularly are 18.99. They can live happily in a 20 gallon tank for most of their lives. They dont require daily feeding, only 3 times a week. They can be fed daily, however they only eat in total darkness, so you would have to monitor the consumption to make sure your not leaving crickets inside the tank for prolonged periods of time that could hurt your lizard.
