U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Seeks Input on Potential Ban Pertaining to Boas, Pythons and Anacondas
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering a ban on the interstate trade and importation of snakes of the genera Python, Boa, and Eunectes (anacondas). Details are available on the Regulations.gov site, including a summary of the proposed regulations (also available as a PDF), and link to submit comments. In a nutshell, because of the serious problems with Burmese pythons establishing themselves in the Florida Everglades, The South Florida Water Management District requested that Burmese pythons be added to a list of injurious
species covered by the Lacey Act (which covers many aspects of conservation and possession, transport and sales of wildlife). This prompted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to begin a review of biological and economic information about several species of constricting snakes to determine whether they should all be added to the list of injurious species.
At first, the ban on importation and interstate transport may not seem like the end of the pet trade in these snakes, but experts warn that with these restrictions, many breeders and suppliers of these species would likely go out of business, making these species effectively unavailable in the pet trade in the end. The public is invited to make comments about this issue, especially about the scope of the pet trade related to the affected species (as well as concerns over the potential ecological impact of these species) as described in the request for input. If you would like to comment, an online form has been provided along with instructions on sending comments by mail -- but note the warning that you must provide personal information (at least your first and last name, city, state, and postal code) in order to comment, and that all comments along with personal identifying information will be posted on the Regulations.gov site (you may want to read the Privacy and Use Notice prior to commenting). The deadline for submitting comments is April 30, 2008.
