Tomorrow morning Dave Barker should receive the last draft processed by TP&W. At the last revision the permit consisted of the following: (This came from Dave Barker).
"(1) Non-native venomous snakes and they backed off all constrictors except the biggest five.
(2) I am led to believe they are willing to write into the law the permit price of $25 which will be unchanged year-to-year except for annual increases to be specified (I suggested 3%).
(3) It's one permit per person per year, not a permit for each snake.
(4) Permit holders who comply with this law and make reports to the state about their holdings will not be subject to inspections.
(5) People newly in possession of venomous snakes will have a grace period to either leave the State or purchase a permit.
(6) Anyone who applies for a permit will receive one; there will be no qualifications or inspections necessary to receive a permit.
(7) There will be a penalty for releasing any of the permitted snake species into the wild (Class B misdemeanor) .
If all of this is actually written into the next draft, it will be the most lenient state permit for venomous snakes in the USA."
We need more letters and we need AFFIDAVITS! Affidavits need to come from police, fireman, EMS, Hospital Personnel, and first responders. The affidavit needs to state that while performing job duties they never had to deal with a dangerous situation involving a large constrictor or an exotic venomous snake.
Even if the committee passes the bill tomorrow, we can still gather more letters and affidavits to present to the senate hearing this fall.
Copies of letters and affidavits can be e-mailed or faxed to me to take to the capital. Call first for fax number.
